A Study on the Quality of Life of the Middle-Aged in Pohang City - Comparison 1988 data with 1999s of Quality of Life

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of the Quality of Life of middle-aged in 1998 and compare the data with 1998¢¥s in Pohang city.

The subject of this research was a total of 162 in 1988 and 151 in 1998,

both male and female, between 30 and 59 years of age, residing in Pohang city. Ago distribution and sex ratio for the sample were matched with the distribution found in the total population of the city of the Pohang.

Data were collected during the period from December 14 to 29, 1988 and November 30 to December 4, 1998. The study instrument was made by Dr. Ro. The scale for this instrument consisted of 47 items, covering 6 factors :

emotional state, economic life, self-esteem, physical state and function, relationship with neighbors and family relationships. Responses were obtained from the respondents through a self-reporting method and each item had a possible score of 5. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Pearson correlation coefficients and Gosset¢¥s student t-test.

The results of this study are as follows :

1. The average score of Quality of Life(called QOL hereafter) was 3.18 ¡¾ 0.40(M ¡¾ S.L.) with a range of 2.26 to 4.34 in 1998.

2. QOL was the highest in the 30¡®39 year age bracket and there was a significant difference between age groups. By factors, ¢¥emotional state¢¥ ¢¥self-esteem¢¥ ¢¥physical state and function¢¥ and ¢¥family relationships¢¥ showed the highest value in the 30¡­39 year age group.

3. With regard to sex, QOL score of male was higher than female¢¥s and there was a significant difference. By factors, ¢¥economic life¢¥ and ¢¥physical state and function¢¥ showed higher value in the male group than female.

4. With regard to educational background, QOL was the highest in the college graduate group and there was a significant difference between educational background.

5. There was significant correlation between the QOL score and the current state of health(r=0.544, p=0.000).

6. Since average QOL score in 1988 had been 3.31(S.D.=0.47), current average score showed lower value significantly(t=2.64, p<.05).

7. By demographic variables, ¢¥religious group¢¥ ¢¥highschool graduation group¢¥ ¢¥housewife group¢¥ ¢¥group of monthly income is 500,000-1,000,000 won¢¥ ¢¥married people¢¥ ¢¥group of house possession¢¥ were significantly lower than the 1988¢¥s.

8. With regard to QOL factors, ¢¥emotional state¢¥ ¢¥self-esteem¢¥ and ¢¥family relationships¢¥ were significantly lower than 1988¢¥s.

9. With regard to sex and QOL factors, male¢¥s vale was significantly lower than the 1988¢¥s especially ¢¥self-esteem¢¥ and factor. But female was significantly lower in ¢¥self-esteem¢¥ and ¢¥family relationship¢¥ factors.

10. With regard to age groups, QOL score of the 40-49 year age group in 1998 was significantly lower than the 1988¢¥s.
